COMMUNITY SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
At times, growing up for me was an adventure as am sure so was it for you, we learnt a lot but only realized it later, as adults.
From being ignored and throwing unnecessary tantrums, then getting an explanation later why I couldn’t have what I wanted, I started to observe keenly what was happening. I saw tears which made me cry along, but I didn’t realize they were often crying because of happiness. I saw beautiful smiles and found myself smiling back. And I also heard loud laughters and softly laughed along.
In this, I learnt the joy of giving in my childhood and after my provider departed from this earth during my teens, I lacked many of my basic needs. I learnt an even greater lesson: Never to expect. No one is “entitled”.
Even though my upbringing was fun, it was intensely instilled in me to give back to society. Helping the old and the sick, feeding someone, sheltering a family, educating children and denying myself in order to make others smile. Trying to make a selfless difference within my community. A discipline that developed into a habit that I truly appreciate today.
We, as individuals in the Company, apply the principle of helping whenever we can as we pass through this wonderful world. We do this by giving back to our society in small ways, and by being personally involved in what we do rather than just donating to a faceless organization. Activities that we perform include visiting kids in Nairobi’s Kibera slums so that boys and girls are provided with some of their basic necessities.
In Kenya, each quarter we help families put a roof over their heads. We have “upcountry” people who inherited a parcel of land but have no means of building a house. We contribute to buy the construction materials and by using the soil from the ground to build bricks, in a week they have a home. We also contribute to families who house orphans by buying blankets, mattresses and food. It’s the small gestures that makes a big difference and this makes us feel more fulfilled when we witness the appreciation and gratitude.
All the above we do back home in Kenya. I guess it is true – “charity must begin at home”
In Qatar we volunteer our time to comfort cancer inflicted patients at Rumailah and HMC hospitals who have no one to visit them during their difficult time in hospital. We worked hand in hand with close friends to make their stay in hospital as comfortable as possible and involve the respective Embassy to fly-in a relative to give them comfort in their final days.
We plan to provide more assistance in future based on our resources.
